PART III

~ Mafia ~

Mike Anderson finds himself in a rut in his latest case. Desperate times call for desperate measures, our introvert detective winds up in the last place he ever thought he would be: his high school reunion.

Chapter Seventeen

"Mr. Reynolds, I assume you know why you are here." Chief Taylor said, eyes like lasers beamed directly at the suspect, Mr. Reynolds. Taylor was in his element right now. This was his home court advantage, the interrogation room. Evidence is what puts people in jail, but it all begins and ends in the interrogation room.

He's the best at reading people. He can tell if they aren't telling the complete truth. It's a skill that allowed him to climb all the way up to the position of police chief. And now once again he's putting his talents to good use.

But that's not why I was here, standing outside looking through the one way mirror. I wasn't there to see Taylor put on a show. I usually attended these interrogations because sometimes I'll catch something they miss. That's why I was hired on to be a consultant to the Houston Police Department. I have talents of my own.

Taylor and I were complete opposites in that regard. He was the confidant leader that could trust his instincts and make gut decisions about a suspect that might steer the case closer to the end, towards putting someone behind bars. I on the other hand was the guy behind the glass, observing everything from a distance, planning, forming motives and connections using what we know. I could spot the inconsistencies in someone's story and use logic to uncover the truth behind what had happened.

But that was only part of the reason I was there. The other part was the lawyer sitting next to Mr. Reynolds on the other side of the table, my father, James Anderson. In all of my years of living, I had never seen him work before.

"My client is here willingly, so if you will please ask your questions so that we could be on our way." James spoke for his client.

The relationship between my father and I was nonexistent. I lived with him as a child, but he was at work a lot. I knew my babysitter better than I knew him. The few times he was at the house, he was very strict and judgmental of the hobbies I had. He probably wanted me to become a lawyer like him.

When I finally graduated high school I was as good as gone. The University of Illinois gave me a full scholarship, and a few years after that I was off enjoying my dream career as a game programmer in Chicago. I had gotten in right as the gaming industry had started to take off.

And then fate had taken me back to Houston. I was back in my home town on business and suddenly I found myself the number one suspect in a murder investigation. But I had been framed, as it turned out, by my best friend Jessica.
